    OwnedCore Report #100 - Half-Life >Sponsored by BlazingBoost<

100!!!!!!!!! 100-ish weeks of OwnedCore Reports. Been a long time coming. I was going to spice it up this week with something new since there hasn't been that much news worth getting hyped over lately. But then Valve announced a new Half-Life and speaking of news worth getting hyped up over I feel like it doesn't get much better than that. So next week, the 101st OC Report, will be something super fun, new, fresh, and spicy! But for now let's get into this Half-Life stuff!

This OwnedCore Report is Sponsored by BlazingBoost

Half-Life is back. That sentence was a long time coming. Technically we didn’t get the Half-Life 3 that we all meme'd about for 10+ years but we may have gotten something much better. Half-Life Alyx. Just this past week we got an announcement from Valve and if you know Valve you know that this was out of the blue. What we got was the future of virtual reality gaming. It makes sense. Just like the original Half-Life games, which innovated the PC FPS genre, this new addition to the franchise was going to change how we see this new frontier of gaming forever. Up until this point VR was kind of underwhelming for most gamers. It definitely gets hyped up when new hardware comes out but as far as how many people are buying this hardware, have the PC’s to run the games, and have the room in their living space to fully utilize the games is definitely slim. This announcement doesn’t necessarily change all of that but what it does change is the quality of the games you can play. See up until this point most VR games looked like the old floppy disk demos for PC games back in the late 90s. Jank, incomplete, and buggy are some words that could be agreed upon to describe most VR titles. But Half-Life Alyx seems to be the first time that a VR game looks more than just a party game where you pretend to be a fry cook making burgers or using a sword to hit objects along with the beat of a song. It looks like a fully fledged campaign, the graphics look smooth, and dare I say it would easily pass for a 2019 regular PC game.

So what do we know about this new Half-Life.

    • It is VR only.

    • It is shipping March 2020

    • It is a prequel to Half-Life 2 and it is recommended by Valve you play HL2 Episode 2 before Alyx

    • You get it for free if you pre-order Valve’s new VR hardware, the Valve Index, by the end of 2019.

    • Source 2 development tools for building new levels will be available to the public.

    • Workshop integration on Steam. Mods will be downloadable right from the headset most likely so you won’t have to even take it off.

    • It is the largest game team Valve has ever had.

    • It can be played on other VR hardware. It is not Valve Index exclusive.

    • 15 hour playthrough but has great exploration opportunity to get lost in.

    • Has smooth locomotion option for movement but the game is designed for teleportation movement for the most part.

A Valve Quote about the future of Half-Life

“It’s probably no surprise that many people at Valve have been wanting to get back to the Half-Life universe for a long time, and this experience has only reinforced that. In the process of creating Half-Life: Alyx, we’ve had to explore new ways to tell stories with these characters and this world, and we’ve discovered a lot of new gameplay experiences that go beyond what we’ve been able to do before. Of course, well have to wait and see how people react to Half-Life: Alyx once its out, but wed love to continue pushing forward.”
This could be perceived as, if this game flops we won’t be seeing much Half-Life if any Half-Life stuff in the future. Valve News Network has reported that it is “uncomfortable” to hear that but reassures us that the game is getting insane traction since its announcement so there is probably nothing to worry about. But does this also mean the future of Half-Life is only going to be on VR? My bet is yes.

All in all. Half-Life is back and who knows, maybe we’ll see VR Portal 3 next. If any company can make VR worth it it’s Valve.
