Best way to gain PokeCoins

I know that the only way to gain coins is through fighting and having a pokemon in a gym. My question is does the amount of gyms you control determine how many coins you get? So far I have only been able to control 1 gym because I am located in New York and gyms are constantly being taken over.

Also if this is true, would it be easiest to just find a low populated area and try to take over as many gyms as possible?

The more gyms you control the more coins you get. You can try smaller cities or low populated areas and capture those gyms yeah. That would be ideal.

You'll get 500 dust and 10 coins for every gym you control when you collect your reward. But you get rewards for max. 10 gyms. (5000 dust and 100 coins is max you can collect, even though you might be controlling more gyms.)
