There are 4*4=16 "normal size" squares in the "background" and 4+4=8 "smaller" squares which form 2 additional "normal size" squares.
This adds up to 16+8+2 =26. Now if you count squares formed by 4 "normal size" squares (2x2 shape), you can fit 9 of those in the grid adding
up to 26+9=35. Now, there are also squares formed by 9 "normal size" squares (3x3 shape), you can fit 4 of those in (one for each "corner")
adding up to 35+4=39. Finally, there is the "large square" aka. the square every other square is in, adding up to 39+1=40.
