How does Multiplayer work in diablo 3?

Is the game single player and then only multiplay when you do PVP matchmaking? me and my friends are trying to figure this out. Thanks!

The difference between single player and multiplayer is almost nothing, The maps are just as random, the same vendors are there.

The only difference honestly is that monsters get tougher other than that there's no difference.

So the multiplayer is just Co-op campaign basically?

Yep, but just as fun, from my time in beta, I noticed that the amount of monsters sadly never changes.
