Question regarding duplicating

I've been reading a bit about duplicating items, just out of curiousity. I've just really never understood how the basics of it work, but I've seen that quite a lot of people are talking about some program called WPE (Winsock Packet Editor). I don't understand what this program really is, and what it really is for.. I would appreciate if someone here could please explain what this program was really made for, and if I were to start up this program and try to duplicate items on WoW, would I be banned?

I am not sure if this is the right section, but I couldn't post it under Exploits or Bots / Programs since I am not allowed to ask questions there.

Everytime I've seen a dupe in action it involves an exploit, sometimes it's something really stupid that Blizzard overlooked, but nowadays it's typically something like separating your character from the server if that makes any sense (See Trade Window Exploit). As for the program, I don't think any actually do dupes. I can't see how that would work; it's more than likely a virus.

I doubt that every single method out there are patched. All the public ones are i guess. But i can assure you there are some private dupes going around

There have to be several dupe methods that currently work. It is quite often that you see someone selling epic cut/uncut gems in bulk (hundreds) on Kil'jaeden Horde, in addition to random people selling mass amounts of practically everything for fairly cheap. I have been trying to find a working dupe, but haven't found anything yet. I'm still new to this and don't have connections with well informed people.
