standard bearer rule

i have been playing 8th for a while and the rule that says if your unit runs from combat its standard bearer dies so the enemy can get it. This i think is a bad rule as what if you only have one guy left in the unit and he is your standerard bearer. that would mean that the enemy would get the points for that unit even though they did not kill the last man properly. i understand why the enemy would get the standard but why does it have to kill the bearer aswell, why could they just get the standard and then you swap your satndard bearer for a normal guy.
