Windows XP and 3gb ram limit

Hi, I'm not sure if it was on this site but I read somewhere it was possible to get Windows XP 32bit to address and use more than 3gb of ram by editing some dll files with a hex editor. I'm pretty sure it was here but I can't find it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

x64 version on Windows XP can run more than 3.25gb.
I suggest you dont mess around with the dlls and just get a x64 version.

What Aestysu said, I doubt you actually can use >3.25gb after you've modified the files - I guess it just shows up the actual amount. I can be wrong tho.

I'm running Windows 7 64 Bit Enterprise but Windows XP is faster. Just bugs me that I read about the hack and can't remember where it was. Wanted to try it on a VM.

The problem with 32bit operating systems is that they can only "see" your total amount of ram, but can't allocate it. I'm sure a programmer more qualified than myself could explain why to you, however, my guess is the byte size it uses is inferior to current, and thus can't use a terabyte of ram (unlike 64bit OS's). If you really want XP to see, and get the visual stimulation of "having" all of your ram, you can simply Start>Run>msconfig>Boot tab and tick the line that says "PAE", that should allow you to see that your OS "sees", but not uses most/all of your ram. If it ends up at 3.9gb instead of 4, this is just a minor annoyance. If you want to be rid of it, go Windows XP 64-bit.

Check this page out: Memory Limits for Windows Releases (Windows)
    That should answer your question.
