Scroll down to the bottom of the index and it not only shows how many are in, but also shows who is in.

It requires a mysql database query and as the site uses up a lot of resources because we get a tremendous number of hits daily, my way to keep the site from being seriously slow is by not displaying too many statistics on the main page. You'll notice if your not logged in you can't even see how many users are logged in.
