    Activision Blizzard to acquire MLG?

Following the press release from Activision Blizzard in October 2015 announcing the creation of their own dedicated eSports division, eSports Observer has reported that MLG has sold “substantially all” of their assets to Activision Blizzard.

While there is no official confirmation from either party about the sale, eSports Observer has provided what it claims to be an excerpt from the letter sent to shareholders regarding the deal, which reportedly cost $46 Million US Dollars. If true, the now former CEO Sundance DiGiovanni has been replaced with Greg Chisholm, MLG's former Chief Financial Officer, and MLG will have its corporate name to MLG Legacy Holdings, Inc.

If the deals turns out to be true, it could pose an interesting shift in the eSports world as it currently stands. While organising and broadcasting events was once the domain of ESL, MLG and the like, developers have begun taking back control and hosting their own tournaments as the incentive to do so becomes more lucrative with each passing tournament.

Activision Blizzard and MLG have had a history together in the eSports scene, with Activision’s franchise Call of Duty being a major tournament draw card for both companies, as well as a history between MLG and Blizzard with World of Warcraft in 2010 and Starcraft. With Blizzard heavily invested in making their upcoming FPS Overwatch an eSports success, and the growing popularity of both Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm who’s tournaments have been run by Blizzard themselves, an acquisition of MLG could help push these games and events to new heights.

However, it isn't just Activision Blizzard games that MLG organises and broadcasts tournaments for. Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Halo 5, Smite and Super Smash Bros. all feature heavily in their tournaments which leads to the obvious question - what would happen to the other titles? Would Activision Blizzard wholly assimilate MLG into their eSports division, who's current Senior Vice President was an MLG co-founder and President, or would it continue to host tournaments for other games alongside their own, allowing them to generate revenue from other companies titles?

Whatever the case may be, it is purely speculation at this point. Without a full statement or press release from either company, or more than a small excerpt from the shareholders letter, no one can truly know what the intentions of Activision Blizzard are with this purchase, if it happened at all.

I wonder if this is going to affect the MLG major that was coming up for CS:GO since it is new ownership.

One thing that doesn't surprise me was that MLG was mostly funded by Call of Duty tournaments and streamers and since Activision owns CoD this makes a ton of sense. I am not sure how this will really affect the "Blizzard" side of Activision Blizzard though. Hopefully they push e-sports. Even these weekly GCD tournaments for WoW have been really fun to watch.

46 Million also seems a bit cheap considering this was the first year MLG pulled a profit
