OwnedCore Report #81 - Blizzard scraps 50% of all games >Sponsored by Eldorado<

Greetings OC and welcome to the 81st OC Report. This week was not so much jam packed but we did get some news under the Blizzard umbrella which is always the best type of news. For starters 8.2 dropped last week which was credited as being BFA's savior patch, also Mike Morhaime did an interview where he stated Blizzard scraps about 50% of the games they start, and lastly another store mount was added in WoW and people were fired up per usual.

This OwnedCore Report is Sponsored by Eldorado

The team behind Eldorado started trading almost 10 years ago. Since then we have bought and sold billions in in-game gold and millions of items in RuneScape, Path of Exile, World of Warcraft, Rocket League, CS:GO, and more. As buyers, sellers and gamers, we have seen it all, from honest-to-goodness dealers to scam victims with zero customer support. Harnessing years of experience and love for the market, and with a strong belief that together we can revolutionise in-game trading, we set out to build what Eldorado is today — a secure, easy-to-use marketplace with sterling support that empowers both sides of the trading community.

    8.2

Last week 8.2 came out and before it did was looked at as the patch that will keep BFA alive or confirm its death. For some it saved BFA but others the death is more apparent then ever. 8.2 came with a Timeless Isle remake in Mechagon, a new mega dungeon, a brand new arch nemesis in Azshara including her zone Nazjatar, and more. As great as all these changes and additions were nothing was done to the classes and probably won't be until 9.0 and PvP is still in shambles according to a lot of the pros in the scene. If done right though Azshara could be WoW's next Lich King and art wise the patch is a homerun.

If you don't mind patch spoilers here are some cool in-game cinematics from Nazjatar and Mechagon.

Also a new raid is set to release in 8.2, Azshara's Eternal Palace. The Raid unlock schedule is the following.

    • July 9 US / July 10 EU– Normal and Heroic Difficulties

    • July 16 US / July 17 EU – Mythic and Raid Finder Wing 1 (Abyssal Commander Sivara, Blackwater Behemoth, Radiance of Azshara)

    • July 30 US / July 31 EU– Raid Finder Wing 2 (Lady Ashvane, Orgozoa, The Queen’s Court)

    • August 13 US / August 14 EU – Raid Finder Wing 3 (Za’qul, Queen Azshara)

With new raids comes the race for world first streams by Method which are always fun to watch. Last raid they fell short losing to Pieces but I bet they come back harder on this one since its a full raid tier. It will be interesting to see if one of their main streamers and members, MethodJosh, will be involved after he was indefinitely banned recently on Twitch for "'Other terms of service violation". Also Limit, North Americas #1 guild, might be making a surprise appearance. We know this thanks to a possible slip of the tongue by popular WoW streamer Toweliee.

    Mike Morhaime tells all

Mike Morhaime, Co-Founder of Blizzard ENT, gave a talk at Gamelab's in Barcelona last week and some interesting things were said.

    • He left to spend more time with his family. Understandable when your a billionaire and have many years ahead of you. Chris Metzen left for similar reasons.

    • Blizzard cancels 50% of its projects. The reasons for this varies. Sometimes the game becomes way too expensive to continue making. Other times they realize the market isn't there. If it's being cancelled it could be many of reasons including not meeting their quality standards.

    • On Titan.

“It was a brand-new universe, and it was going to be the next generation MMO, that did all sorts of things, and it had different modes, and we were kind of building two games in parallel at the same time. It sort of never really came together," said Morhaime. "We struggled. The game was in development for many years, and we didn’t announce the game, but we had talked about that we were working on a next-generation MMO. I think that somehow the codename did get out there. I don’t know if we released that or not."
"What ended up happening with that game is, at some point the team basically came to us and said that the engine really wasn’t where it needed to be, and the team had grown to a point that it was really difficult to get the engine to where it needed to be while keeping the team busy," said Morhaime. "Instead of doing that, we asked the team to take a couple of months and think about, ‘what’s one idea that we could do going forward? Think about a couple of other ideas, where if we were to start right now and do anything we wanted, what other things could we do?’ And they took about two months, came up with a couple of different ideas, and one of those ideas was Overwatch."
All in all its information we seemed to know. The game became too big and the direction wasn't clear.

    • He said Diablo 3's Auction House was a good idea but it was a decision decided after the loot system was finished and they didn't mesh well.

    • On Diablo Immortal.

When you have a group that’s really passionate about a franchise like Diablo and really excited about a product that hasn’t been announced yet–I think Blizzard tried to manage expectations. They weren’t going to announce Diablo IV at the event. I’m not sure that message really got through. They posted on the forums and everything like that, and in the past that would have been enough. In this case I think most of the audience probably did not get that memo.
Definitely great information. The only thing I am not sure on is if family was the only reason he left. The conspiracy theorist in me still believes he was pushed out initially. Thoughts?

    Store Mount

I created a thread about this (What is your opinion on store mounts in WoW?) but wanted to include it here as well. 2 days before the quarter ended Blizzard announced a new store mount included with a 6 month subscription purchase. The Sylverian Dreamer, seen above, is a unique model mount only obtainable through this promotion and probably will be in the store later on. This isn't the first time Blizzard has added store mounts, in fact lately it has become quite common. Every time one is added though there tends to be a civil war within Blizzard's fanbase. On one side you have the people who don't see the store mounts as an issue, realize they can be obtained with tokens bought with in-game gold, and just think haters are overreacting. On the other hand you have people who are pissed. They are mad because you are playing a game that costs money every expansion plus a monthly subscription therefore everything should be in the game at that point and not behind another paywall. They also hate that these mounts tend to be completely unique models and nothing in the game looks like them so they cannot be farmed like other mounts.

The question is which side is right? Does the fact that these mounts are obtainable via WoW Tokens make it alright for Blizzard to add such things like this or is it complete greed by them and a slap in the face to all their users who pay every month and buy an expansion every 15-20 months?

Personally I think the fact that their unique models is the greediest. Maybe if they had them in shop first and added them in game 6 months later to farm it wouldn't be as bad but putting completely unique stuff in an MMORPG behind a paywall is just greedy. The only time it wouldn't be greedy is if the game was free to play which it is not.

    What are your thoughts?
