Gaming News from Around the Globe

    Overwatch Workshop

Let’s start with Overwatch. The developers of Overwatch have included an Overwatch Workshop which is a fancy way of saying modding tools are now inside Overwatch. From what I am reading these are pretty simple scripting tools and you cannot import anything from outside the game into it. This addition is allowing users to create custom games of their own inside Overwatch. One of the ones that I have seen blow up is Ana Paintball which is a game mode including only Ana and you are 1 shot from being killed. The kicker? You can only quick scope. This means if you scope in for longer than 1.8 seconds you will get stunned. You can check out more about Ana Paintball in this Reddit thread.

It will be very interesting to see what else people come up with even though the modding tools seem limited to other games custom mod tools in 2019. Overall a great addition.

    Blizzcon 2019

Blizzcon 2019 is officially announced and the dates are November 1st and 2nd. Tickets will be on sale this upcoming week on May 4th and next week May 8th. This year is special because it is Warcraft’s 25th Anniversary and with that you can get one of two Warcraft statues with your ticket purchase. According to Blizzard this choice is locked once the ticket is purchased so if you want to go to Blizzcon maybe think about which one you want before the day comes where you’re rushing to buy tickets. What are the two statues? The classic Footmen vs Grunt.

Blizzard also added a new tier of tickets you can buy for Blizzcon. Originally there was the regular Blizzcon Pass and the Benefit Ticket but this year they added one in between the two called the Portal Pass. For $550, compared to the $230 for regular pass, the Portal Pass gives you access to a bunch of cool stuff including:

    • Night at the Faire - An enchanted always-night market full of activities and opportunities to snag some cool swag

    • Portal Pass Lounge - Special lounge area available both Friday and Saturday where you can watch the developer panels or pro matches on the in-lounge video screens where Blizzard employees will also be hanging out so you can chat. Also includes complimentary refreshments, phone charge and game station, and more.

    • Convenience Perks and Parking - Unlocks access to preferred lines for registration and security from Thursday to Saturday. You get better vehicle parking while spaces are available.

    • Early Con Entry - You can enter the doors early and get better seating for the panel you are most interested in.

    • I also heard you get to do a Disney World style VIP line for playable demos at Blizzcon.

This caused a little bit of outrage but honestly Blizzard is a business and these type of passes are normal at a lot of other events including the Path of Exile one coming in November for the announcement of 4.0. There is a lot to be mad at Blizzard for in 2018/2019 but the Portal Pass is not one of them.

    The WoW Mod tool ban

Staying on topic of Blizzard news there was an interesting model edit fiasco in World of Warcraft this past week. Essentially a bunch of people were using tools to modify game files and the most common was essentially making the breast of female characters bigger but also modding armor to look better. This was 100% client side like the popular tmorph. Nonetheless Blizzard issued a massive 6 month ban wave to all participants of this mod. This caused outrage because it was not that big of a deal, it was clientside, and people were even posting pictures of the US Moonguard Goldshire Inn being completely deserted which was hilarious.

A couple days later Blizzard issued a statement that they were reversing the bans on all of the accounts and instead of a 6 month ban were going to give the accounts warnings instead. This came with a sigh of relief as Moonguard Goldshire Inn was once again flooded with its fine roleplay once again. All in all this was a fun little moment in one of WoW’s darkest times. I can’t help but think if Blizzard would unban these people if the game was doing well.

    Classic WoW itemization update

Lastly we have a Classic WoW update. Progressive Itemization has been a hot topic in the world of Classic WoW. Will we be getting the items as they were in the beginning and have them get altered throughout the expansion exactly as it was in Vanilla or would Blizzard just give us the finalized versions of each item? This might sound silly but it was a very serious topic as some items in dungeons towards the end of Vanilla were so good after buffs that they were best in slot up until later raids like AQ and Naxx. This was by design at the time to serve as a catch up mechanic toward the end of Vanilla to allow people to get closer to the current end game content of AQ and Naxx quicker before BC came out. Blizzard acknowledges this issue but is still going to go with the 1.12 (last patch of Classic) item versions. They say they might not add some of the items 1.12’s versions due to them being so good but for the most part everything else will be 1.12.

This means once you get Bonereaver’s Edge from MC you probably won’t be replacing it until Naxx or AQ 40 over a year later because it will be the 1.12 version. Now as much as this sucks one counterpoint they brought up is that you cannot recreate Vanilla as it once was as far as progressive itemization. If they go full out and update the items exactly how it was in Vanilla than people are going to have to constantly check each item in their bag at end game on WoWHead and see if it eventually gets buffed or not in later patches and if it’s worth hanging on to. This is something that was impossible to do in Vanilla obviously because you could not see into the future so in a way progressive itemization the second time around would not be very Vanilla-like either.

All in all the Classic community seems to be okay with this and almost expected it. The other thing to remember is content will be released vanilla-like so a lot of items in like Dire Maul won’t be accessible right away and Dire Maul had some of the best 1.12 items for catching up. It seems to be a good middle ground and both sides have pros and cons. You cannot make Classic WoW also feel like it was 2005-2006 again but you can get close and this is close enough.
