OwnedCore Report #40: The History of OwnedCore through the eyes of Kurios

Ok this time it is actually the 40th Report and with it comes one of the coolest interviews I have done. One of the most well known users on the website, Kurios, took time out of his day to answer a bunch of questions I had for him pertaining to the history of OwnedCore, its origins, and just what he is up to these days. Outside of the interview we have some interesting news to cover including Ninja being the first professional gamer to be on the cover of ESPN Magazine, Method getting World First G'huun while streaming, Mario Kart getting voice chat, and more. As always there will also be some community highlights from the past week.

    Community Interview

This weeks community interview is one with somebody everybody on this website knows, Kurios.
Kurios is one of the oldest members of OwnedCore having joined in early 2006 and today stands as one of the Administrators and owners of the website. With OwnedCore's rich history I wanted to not only touch on what Kurios is up to today but also get a glimpse into the mind of somebody who has seen OwnedCore grow from its infancy over 10 years ago into what it is today. Also thank you Smitten for giving me ideas on some questions

    Q: Who is Kurios?

A:KuRIoS is a teacher and the father of two beautiful girls at the age of 1 and 3, they must take after their mother. I will do my best to answer the questions, but my memory may be a bit cracked.

Q: What made you decide to create OC?

A:I did not create OwnedCore or, as it was back then, MMOwned. The history as I know it is that a member called Tory originally and was thought of as a pay to enter site. He then scrapped the idea and Matt took over and made MMOwned as a free site for WoW exploits, cheats and hacks. I joined when the site had ~1000 members registrered, as I was looking for a cheating community for WoW similar to what I had known from the cheating communities from cs. I think I used the site to find a guide to farm Dire Maul.

I had been to hackingsource, but it wasn't really what I was looking for, specially not after they sold out to certain unnamed websites(pay for crappy content). Another member, Cush, and I started to post everything we could and sort of had a secret race in posting the most.
I posted a guide for my guild which was then posted to another site and Matt ripped it from there and that is how I really started contributing (back when 10 reputation was a lot).

My first botting guide on how to use openbot with isxwow, was my biggest thread and that made me really interested in botting.

Q: When did you realize it was going to succeed? Was it a specific thread that blew up?

A:Shortly after Cush and I had our "who-can-post-the-most" thing the members on MMOwned really started to come and we had a lot of great members joining Apoc, Cypher, Kynox, MaiN, Nesox, Dragon[sky], MaXe just to name a few.. They all wanted to share and be a part of the great community and as time went on MMOwned grew and with the "death" of noggaholic came a lot of explorers and model editors as well.
More and more bot-creators came to the site and wanted to share and learn from others, people like JuJuBoSc and Apoc were always willing to help out others. Along with the more programs came reversers and even though they wanted to keep in the shadows they know who they are.

Q: Do you still keep in touch with "Cypher, kynox, Apoc, namreeb, MaiN, Nesox, 2d, JD, hi5, JuJuBoSc, unholyshaman, flying piggy etc "?

A:Occasionately, but nowhere near as much as I wanted to, no matter what has happened between us, or how they were last seen on OC.

Q: Was OC always intended to be a spot for sharing exploits and game breaking stuff or did it mold into that naturally?

A:When I joined, yes, and remember that I was just a member at this time, so when I write "we" I mean MMOwned where I was a member. The private server section was also there and it was a big part of MMOwned, there was a lot of people who wanted to share and help others. Unfortunately, the emu server business turned into a mayhem and instead of working together they started attacking each other.

The WoW reversing and exploring was big and we had a private server section as well However, we also had a section for ingame scams, such as the "CoD empty mails" "The trade trick" "It's my birthday" trick, later on it changed a bit into account phishing and scamming etc which we were never proud of, but it blew up in our faces and we were unable to stop it until later on. Suddenly it was just a very big part of our "traffic".

With the death of the mysterious noggaholics, with dopefish in the lead, people turned to MMOwned and the Model editing section was born.
At this time there was no trade section on MMOwned or any other games than WoW.

Q: Why was MMOWNED Changed to OwnedCore?

A:As I mentioned before, the scam section grew into something we didn't want. And when we saw that people started thinking it was ok to post stolen cc info and such we knew we had to change something. We also wanted to expand the forums into being more than MMORPG's, or well, more than WoW.
Matt, the staff and I, discussed it for some time and agreed that a name change was the way to go forward if we were to do such a big change as to remove a forum that gave us 30% traffic and if people were to accept the expansion in games. So basically that was why.

Q: Do you have a specific thread that stands out to you as maybe a favorite over the years?

A:Many, but I actually think that the one that stood out the most was in a section that I am rarely seen in, the exploration forum. The thread on "Opening the puzzle box of Yogg-Saron " brought back so many things of what WoW used to be about for me, before wowhead and before taking down a boss was about having read the guide. The mystery of how to succeed in boss encounters or class quests. Downing Raggy for the first time for a server first or simply getting 100k gold back in vanilla. The community was working together and brainstorming and theorycrafting about how to open the box.

Q: I am shocked your favorite thread is not "The longest OwnedCore Thread" that you started!

A:Hehe, it has no real content, it was just a thread made to stop a ton of the other "Comment with xxxxxxx" threads

Q: What made you guys decide to implement a reputation system? Was that a part of the core mechanic of the website?

A:People are eager to succeed and achieve, it was an easy way to give people something to strive for. (WoW achievements, levels etc etc, it's everywhere)

Q: It is pretty clear OC is very World of Warcraft dominant. Was that always intended or did that just naturally happen?

    A:It was made for WoW

Q: Do you have any crazy stories of the MMOWNED Days?

A:Many, but MMOwned was a lot smaller and you sort of knew everyone. Today we know the frequent bawxers and the oldies, but naturally we cant know ppl like we used to.

I can remember when Kuiren (old staff member) wanted to move a thread from one section to Guides forum and he moved ALL THREADS from ALL FORUMS, including staff, into Guides section. *PANIC PANIC PANIC* where is Matt so he can do something...*PANIC* .... That is how the staff phrase of "he pulled a Kuiren" was born.

We, or I, used to come home drunk from the pubs or nightclubs and cause havoc in the bawx changing the nicks of members in there and just being a tard, hence why Apoc usually refers to me as the drunken borderline retard. One night when I came home drunk and logged on MMOwned, I had 90+ private messages and I saw my name no longer being the Supermod Color, instead I was red, admin red, and I thought it was Matt who was playing with me. However, next day I was still red and the staff lounge had a nice thread with "Congratulations KuRIoS"

Q: Where do you see OwnedCore in 10 years?

A:Hopefully still here and the biggest, and best, site for underground gaming. There will be a new big game and I hope that many of the oldies and newcomers will make OC into what we experienced with WoW and that members like Apoc, Cypher, JuJuBoSc etc will inspire new members.

Q: How big of a threat was and is Reddit to OC? Being that anybody can create a forum-like community on any topic for free now and how much reach the website as a whole has. Old school forums seem to have become few and far between due to Reddit.

A:I don't think it is anymore of a threat than anything else. reddit is fine for "drive by" news.. where as OC is something you should come back to.

Q: Do you wish there was a direction the site went in the early days that's different from where it ended up now?

A:I wish that we never had the scam section and that we were better at gathering the emu community than we were.

Q: Was scamming actually that big back in the old OC days? I feel like today it's not that big of a thing if at all.

A:It wasn't then it was and now it is not a thing at all, now it is about preventing being scammed. Scamming was never intended, what was intended was casinos and taking advantage of ppl being curious (ie send empty gifts with cod 1g). Our trade staff report a lot of scammers and fraudsters to the authorities regularly.

Q: If you could change one thing about OC today what would it be?

A:I don't know.. We have been around long enough to see that the users and the way people behave online has changed a lot. It is more about grief, money, wanting things for free and being spoonfed rather than wanting to learn on your own at the moment. Or well, it is that way for a lot of people.

I would love to have Cypher, kynox, Apoc, namreeb, MaiN, Nesox, 2d, hi5, JuJuBoSc, unholyshaman, flying piggy etc active on OC again, eventhough it wasn't all of them that I agreed with in the end, I respect them.... a lot.

Q: Why do you think OC has been around for over 12 years when so many other exploit sites and forums wish they could survive that long?

A:Because we didnt bow down when unnamed and others tried to blackmail their way to the top. Plus an incredible community that popped up at exactly the right time. I think we have been brave enough to change things even when they were a big source of income.

Q: "Because we didnt bow down when unnamed websites and others tried to blackmail their way to the top. " Can you elaborate on what happened here?

A:Some sites tried to push their way forwards with fake lawsuits and Cease and Desist letters.

Q: Is there a member of OC that may not be known for it but definitely did a lot for the website either as a contributor, staff, or any form? Could be an active member today or somebody from way back.

A:All members do a lot, but some more than others. I think many of the old time regulars helped shape OC in what it is today. A lot of people in memory editing or B&P haven't shared their knowledge publicly, but still helped out a lot without being awarded.

Q: Did you ever in your wildest dreams think OC would hit over 1 million Members? What was your reaction when we did?

A:Not to begin with, but after some time it started to sink in, that members liked what we do and they wanted to be a part of it. I was proud and happy.

Q: What do you think I would have to do to convince Maclone to do an interview? I feel like I'm slowly easing him into it without him realizing.

    A:Uhm, hell to freeze over?

Q: What is Kurios up to today outside of OC?

A:At the moment I am making a Magic Mirror, just for the fun of it. I spend all my free time with my daughters, family and friends. Not as many pubs or night clubs anymore, mostly when it has to do with football (not handegg)

Q: Do you still play any games?

A:I play Fifa, civilizations and CS:GO, plus the occasional Battlefield, but my computer is ancient and can't run it well anymore.

Q: Do you think World of Warcraft is going to last another 10 years or are we witnessing the final few expansions?

A:I honestly don't know. I don't like what I have seen from Blizzard since.... Pandaria.. And I think that they made a horrible decision when they started dumbing down, sorry I mean adapting, their content based on forum flame from 13 year olds. Well, I guess things are always more fun looking back.

    Q: Horde or Alliance?

A:Alliance at first then later on a mix. In the end WoW was only about playing the auction house and making it to 1 million gold on as many chars as possible.

Q: Classic WoW is officially coming back. Is this going to be Pokemon Go 2.0 for OwnedCore when it comes out? OC has roots in Classic WoW guides, exploits, and more and now its all coming back.

A:Every expansion or new feature brings out a lot of things. So I hope people will discover new awesome things to share.

Q: Are you personally going to dabble even casually into Classic WoW upon release?

A:No. I almost feel like puking just from the WoW loading screen. I can't find any passion left in me to open it.

Q: Was WoW your first gaming love? Did you dabble in any of the older MMORPG games prior to your WoW years?

A:Played counterstrike on high level, back when it was CS 1,1 or 1,6 iirc. But other than that, no nothing major. The first time my little brother played WoW I actually commented that "I can't see why you like that game, I will never play it" 1 month later my friends escorted a level 15 Night elf hunter from Darnassus to Stormwind :P

Q: Being that you were so big into CS do you follow CS:GO eSports or play it at any level anymore? The eSport scene is on another level right now especially in the West.

A:I play it casually and I am really really good at whining and yelling at the screen. I suck! In strong contrast to what I once said to JD that I would NEVER do, I actually follow Counter-Strike now, I like Astralis, them being all Danish. I don't really like North as they are sponsored by fc copenhagen, which I hate!! Other than that I have an interest in following CajunB.

Q: Do you want to tell everybody about your betting group and how they can get involved? (you don't have to answer this if you don't want to)

A:At the moment it is free and they can join if they feel like it, once (in 2019) I start betting regularly again it will be paid again and 15 EURO/USD per month.
I give proposals for bets and certain profit on free bets when they are offered. We have had a solid profit all months running, except one month I think.

Kurios betting group can be found HERE

Q: Any last words for the community of OC to close this up?

    A:You are freaking awesome.!

    News From Around the Globe

    Method

So if you play WoW there is probably no way you missed out on this news but Method not only got another World First for their insane resume but they did it while streaming progression at that level for the first time in WoW's history. This was purely community ran and was by far more successful than anything Blizzard has put together for WoW as far as streaming goes. Sco, the GM of Method, who was by far the biggest streamer during the event peaked at over 100k viewers and other members such as MethodJosh not only went from not well known on Twitch to a consistent top 3 WoW streamer with over 5k viewers on average.

As far as the race goes Method were the only top 5 guild streaming the the progression unless you include North America's Wildcard Gaming who were super competitive this tier but ended up not even finishing the boss in the top 6 as of writing this. Method's biggest competitor? NRG Sponsored Limit from North America. Limit has been NA's best guild for well over a year and for sure throughout all of Legion and this tier showed they can compete well beyond the NA race and compete at a World Class level. Method for sure thought they were going to lose World First to Limit due to NA getting the Tuesday reset before EU's Wednesday Reset. This means Limit would not only be getting their weekly chest gear but also get to Vantus Rune the last boss. But after some super close wipes Limit could not secure #1. Method than killed it Wednesday with their reset and Vantus Rune.

Hopefully with the clear success Method had and pure volume of viewers it gave the WoW section during the race other guilds might see the potential to stream their progression at that level as well and maybe even Blizzard might host an event for it as well. Here's to hoping!

    Ninja

It was bound to happen and it came with controversy as expected but Ninja was the first professional gamer to be featured on the cover of ESPN Magazine. In the article was a well written feature about Ninja being the face of the biggest game possibly of all time, Fortnite. They talk about his work ethic, the constant traveling since his rise to fame, and his famous friends he featured on the streams like Marshmello and Drake. Ninja has become a household name and if you have a youngster in your house probably even more. Everybody is playing Fortnite.

With this cover came a bit of expected hate because a lot of old school people still think ESPN should be strictly about traditional sports and video games are not considered sports. This has been a debate between young and old for awhile now and usually most can settle on them not being considered "sports" but rather "eSports". But where the debate always seems to go astray is the "Is Ninja considered an athlete?" question. Now most people who say "no" say "would you consider a professional poker player an athlete?" and others who say "yes" remind the opposition at how professional gaming can be physically draining. Even Jimmy Kimmel got in on the conversation by saying "masterbating teens will now be going to the olympics". Here is a clip of Ninja watching Jimmy Kimmel's take on live television. We here on OwnedCore decided to tweet a poll asking if you considered Ninja an athlete and 73% said "No".

Whether you have Ninja labeled an athlete or video games labeled a sport one thing I think has to be clear is that Ninja and Fortnite changed everything. Video Games, eSports, and Streamers are becoming a part of our every day lives more and more. There is no running from this fact. Ninja and Fortnite booming together and bouncing off each others success showed the true current ceiling of this video game culture. Websites like Twitch have never been more mainstream and big as they are right now and a lot of that is because of Fortnite and Ninja. Ninja recently streamed the Blackout beta for the new Call of Duty and had over 200k viewers. The man has become bigger than just Fortnite, he has become an absolute phenomenon in the streaming and video game world. And with that noted I don't see why ESPN, who clearly has been trying to be connected to eSports considering ESPN eSports has been a thing for years, using the biggest name in video games is such a shocker. There is a culture shift happening right before our eyes and ESPN wants to be a part of it which shouldn't be an issue. If you don't like video games, eSports, or streaming that is fine but you have to accept the fact that you might soon be in the minority.

Mario Kart now has Voice Comms
Nintendo Switch Online came out this week and with it came something I never thought I wanted until we got it and that is Voice Chat for Mario Kart. I personally have just seen videos of this so far being that I don't own a Switch but for starters, voice chat aside, online Mario Kart looks amazing on the Switch. It isn't always easy these days to rally everybody into the living room for a game of Mario Kart so the online feature is definitely something I wish I got into back on the Wii U. But now that the Switch reigns king not only can you rock Mario Kart but you can do it on the go, online, and with voice chat.

Now from the videos I have seen the voice chat doesn't have like whole lobbies talking as if it was a CS:GO match but it seems like you usually get 1-3 others at a time. Also every video of this I watched seemed to be toxic free but I cant fathom that not changing. I can totally see "WHO THE FUCK HIT ME WITH THAT BLUE SHELL YOU *******?" becoming the norm and honestly I can't wait. As long as their is a easy to access mute feature for bad mics and obnoxious players on voice chat than I don't see this being anything but a giant W (win) for Nintendo and the Mario Kart franchise.

    Death Stranding Trailer

I still am not too sure what is going on in this game after all the trailers we have seen but this recent trailer came out just a day ago and with it some Troy Baker from Uncharted as the antagonist. Not much else to say but man this game is either going to be insanely good or the biggest tease of all time and flop.
