    Starcraft Review

At a glance A long, long, time ago in a galaxy far away, Nebu was under att – Wait, wrong story, but it does take place in another galaxy. Starcraft is an amazing RTS game that still holds up as great as the day it was released on March 31, 1998.

    General

    Game: Starcraft
    Genre: RTS
    Developer: Blizzard Entertainment

    Availible on

    P.C.
    Mac
*Also was released on the Nintendo 64 by Mass Media Interactive Entertainment*

    Story

A corrupted human Government, seeking more resources decide to head on over to their neighboring galaxy where the Protoss inhabit to try and obtain more resources, at the same time a deadly race of aliens known as the Zerg also enter the Protoss galaxy bringing devastation and chaos to all that they encounter, the time for war is now.

    System Requirements
    Code:
    Windows

    Pentium 90 or higher
    16 MB RAM
    DirectX-Compatible SVGA Video Card
    Microsoft-Compatible Mouse
    Double-Speed CD-ROM
    (Quad Speed for Cinematics)

    Code:

    Macintosh
    PowerMac or Compatible
    16 MB RAM
    System 7.6 or higher
256 Color, 640x480 Display or Better
    Double-Speed CD-ROM
    (Quad Speed for Cinematics)

    Graphics

For being as old as this game is, the graphics are not that bad, the cut scenes were well done, as well as the ingame play, taking the stance of a 2d person in a 3d world. Amazing detail, and always a favorite game to play.

    Sound

To be honest, I usually had my sound off while I was listening to Disturbed, but the times I did hear the music, it really fit into the theme really well. The characters talk when you click on them, and if you click on them a lot, they get really agitated, much like the characters in World of Warcraft.

    Gameplay

Gameplay is solid, if you are good at multitasking, then I urge you to try this game out. There are so many combinations between all races, such as, “Zerging” making a massive amount of zerglings to rush your opponent in the beginning of the game. Each race has unique characters.

    Zerg

Zerg buildings and units are entirely organic in-game, allowing every Zerg to slowly regenerate if they are damaged. Zerg production is far more centralized than with the Terrans and Protoss; a central hatchery must be utilized to create new Zerg, with other structures providing the necessary technology tree assets, whereas the other two races can produce units from several structures. Zerg units tend to be weaker than those of the other two races, but are also cheaper, allowing for rush tactics to be used. Some Zerg units are capable of infesting enemies with various parasites that range from being able see what an enemy unit sees to spawning Zerg inside an enemy unit. In addition, Zerg can infest some Terran buildings, allowing for the production of special infested Terran units. (Wikipedia.com)

    Protoss
All Protoss units and buildings are covered by a regenerating energy shield, further increasing the amount of damage that they can endure, although units cannot be healed or repaired, more expensive and take longer to create, but extremely powerful. (Wikipedia.com)

    Terran
Terrans are considered to be more adaptive than the other two races and are able to produce units at an average expense. Primary base structures can even lift off and fly to other locations, allowing players to move buildings for quicker troop deployments, access to new resource locations or to save the structures from destruction by the enemy. Terran buildings and mechanized units can be repaired if damaged, and combat medics can heal wounded organic units. (Wikipedia.com)

    Online Mode
    Online mode consists of a few different things, such as;
    Chat Rooms
    Ladder Matches (ranked matches)
    Standard Matches
Custom Maps (CTF, RPG type maps, etc.)

    Customization

Starcraft comes with a Campaign Editor, with this Editor you can create maps of any style, and if your good with variables, triggers, or you have a number of pre-scripted AI scripts, you can mix and match with what you are wanting, and virtually anything is possible.

    Replay:10
    Overall:8.5

    Conclusion

This is a really great game, the story mode can get a little dull at times, but the online mode is absolutely great, its pure competition. If you upgrade to the expansion “Brood War” than there are a lot of new features that make or break a match. Such as, the Protoss Arbiters have a skill called Recall, which teleports however many units in a small radius to a destination point, usually I go all out with Protoss Carriers and have them recalled into the opponents base for pure win! This is definitely a game you must try, yes it is old, yes the graphics are a bit outdated, but this game is still fighting, and still selling! I get the thrill of adrenaline rushing when me and my partner go in for the attack, decimating everything that opposes us. So c'mon, join us in the battlefield, after all, it is war.

There are the pros and cons, just like with anything else.

    Pros:
    Fantastic Online Gameplay
    Very nice social environment
    Pure competition
Built in map-editor for custom games
Feel like facing the best? Go play ladder matches

    Cons:
    Easy to make hacks undetectable
May not suit children who are younger then 16 (lots of cursing from opposing players)

Thats awesome, thanks for the positives, and for graphics, I don't know what the hell I was thinking, I think I was leaning more towards, the Graphics are pretty good for the game being 10 years old. :P

It's also where the idea of zerging comes from - an early rush by someone playing the zerg was a viable tactic to win. Most balanced game ever IMO.

I think it' silly to review a game with expectations of modern times.

The game was state of the art during its time.

The game might be old, but it's still a lot of fun to play just like Counter Strike Source .
