I've seen a lot of questions regarding unattended grows recently. Yes, you can plant seeds and return later in the season to nice plants, IF the growing conditions are entirely in your favor. Chances are that they will not be, unless of course you can plant them between a compost pile and a spring. Since most of us won't be blessed with a Tomato Genie to grant our wish for perfect conditions, I thought I'd share a time tested method that has never let me down. With a little work and minimal to no investment, you can set up a low maintenance outdoor grow. I've harvested pounds from plants I've visited twice during a grow season using the following method. I hope it proves to be useful to some of you.


Please keep in mind that although this method is better than just throwing seeds out and hoping for the best, it is in NO WAY a method for quality Tomato's. As with any gardening, time, attention and constant monitoring are required for optimum growth and quality.


This is the method we used for unattended grows near creek beds:


You'll want to try to find an area a few yards/meters away from the creek, preferably downhill from it. Dig a hole about 24 inches deep. You should find moisture in the soil, if you don't, try moving a little closer to the creek. The hole should be wide enough to fit a 3.5 gallon bucket into. Fill the bottom 8-10 inches of the hole with dime to quarter sized rock (creek beds usually provide plenty of this). The rock will reduce the chance of the plant's main root sitting in water and drowning. It also offers an aerated anchor for the lower roots. Site prep done, now on to the fun stuff!


You'll need 3.5 gallon buckets and lids for this step, as well as a jigsaw or keyhole saw, 2 drywall screws and soil of your choice containing a continuous feeding fertilizer (you can use Miracle Grow if you're really on the cheap). You'll want a soil with a good amount of perlite in it to help retain moisture during the hot months.


Set the lids aside for the moment and cut the bottom of the bucket out leaving a 1.5 to 2 inch strip down the center. It should look like two back to back D's. Now, screw the lid to the center strip you left making a new removable bottom. Fill the buckets with soil, plant your seed/seedling/clone in the center, and soak well. Put it somewhere near your grow area where it won't be disturbed by animals for about 2 weeks while it roots. It will need direct sunlight in order to start strong, this is VERY important.


Once rooted, simply remove the 2 screws from the bottom, set the whole bucket and plant into your hole, and water well. This will allow the soil to settle onto the rock bed and let the roots start to reach out for the water that settles into the rock. I usually give them a dose of Superthrive at this stage as well. There's nothing like it, and it's like feeding your plants steroids without the side effects.


If your grow is in an area you can get to regularly, it's best to check on them every couple of weeks. Of course, I was outlining an unattended grow method, so with that in mind you'll need to return to your garden about 2 weeks after the longest summer day (depending on your area of the world) to remove males. At this time I suggest a moderate to heavy feeding of a flowering fertilizer and another dose of Superthrive.


Your next trip back will be to harvest in early to mid fall depending on your strains and weather. The plants can take 1 or 2 frosts, but I suggest harvesting just before or right after the first one. Cut the plants down, pull up your buckets and dump the remains back in the hole. DON'T LEAVE YOUR BUCKETS! It's not just litter, it's evidence that can draw unwanted attention to a great gardening area.


It's a fairly simple process that will yield more than just poking a hole in the ground, planting a seed and hoping for the best.


Remember that the more you put into it, the more you'll get out of it. Take the time to consider all the important things..........


- How much light will the plants get in the spot you've chosen?
- Do animals regularly use this area?
- Does this creek dry up mid summer? Will I need to pack in water?
- Does the plantlife around my garden stay green into the fall, or will my plants stick out like sore thumbs?
- etc, etc, etc.....
