My summer project this year is to learn a programing language. My only problem is I don't know where to start. Any ideas?

Depends what you want to do.
Try and have a look at C++
C++ is damn hard. If you want something easy look at python, or ruby (there's even a cool little program to help you learn). You can do all kinds of stuff with ruby, so I recommend it.Originally Posted by Marlo

----Gone for an undetermined amount of time----
I've been leaning towards python since its so easy to learn. But C++ is probably the most practical.
Python and Perl programmers have no souls ^_^
And the only language i have ever bothered to learn is PHP and thats because i needed it for my Web Dev.
Lol I hear that a lot oddly enough.Originally Posted by Marlo
BTW Marlo thanks for that programming thread in bots and programs with all the guides in it.
ive just started learning Ruby (using a web-based guide) i think it seems easy enuff. am i allowed to post the guide URL here?..
Humm i tryed to learn C++ with an Ebook, god it's boreing to learn, i give up after a day lol
gah dont start with C++ that killllled me in highschool, start with something fairly easy like javascript. javascript is fairly easy i guess lol
Just learned Basic last year in high school.
Tried learning C++ at one time, bah, painful.
Quit it so fast.
C++ is like swallowing a box of nails to try and learn. Ruby would be my choice.
c++ all the way. It may be hard, but its worth it
Basic is well the most basic its manly used in small programmes nothing to fancy im ok at it and im only 14 lol
if u simplify basic down to its total core its just a flow diagrame
if ur felling brave learn c++ im starting on that allthought im not so enthusiastic
EDIT :
Basic is a very powerful language as a tool for the novice programmer. Basic allows for a wide range of applications, and it has many versions. However, as long as the emphasis is on the techniques of programming and problem solving, the specific syntax is easy to follow.
Ever been messing around with a scientific calculater and got syntax error pop up? thats because of a error in the syntax (Duh) most calculators use basic or somthing allot like it.
if you need a hand with basic you will get allot of help around here up until recently we had a coding section peeps like FP are the people to ask

Science has not yet taught us if madness is or is not the sublimity of the intelligence.
C++ =NO ive heard many bad reports....i was gonna try 4 myself but i never found a download
im not t good with programs like that anyway so i cant reccomend any yet..
Hey Piggy
Well this all depends on 2 things:
1. Is this for something for a future outlook?
2. or is it just for fun?
I know pretty much have a knowledge in every language, expert in php and other web based languages, for future outlook C++/C (for linux enviornments), and .net (for windows).
