Overwrite system files?

OK so my sisters computer ****s up so its up to me to fix it. i can usually fix comps without a problem but this one is annoying. Ya see one of the system files have been corrupted (WINDOWS\system32\config\system) and yes it has no extension. So anyway instead of using crappy microsoft file replacement system i decided to put her hard drive in my comp and just copy my file over to hers but it says;

"cannot overwrite file as it is being used by another program, shut off the program and try again"

or something. So does anyone know how I can overwrite this?

umm...restart your computer and try again? :P

Yea i sometimes get that problem when i'm copying files or moving files. You either have to restart your computer or close all applications (related to it) through task manager. Gl!

how do i know what programs are using it?
Also this is a slave hard drive so nothing should be using it >.<

Oh, well i'd just turn off everything and start again. It's a little more work but much easier in the long run.

It;s prolly being used by the system because its a system file therefore its always being used..maybe try copying it into another one of your folders or somthing?

And yes, cntrl + alt + delete look for it on the process list like glyn said. and end it. if it is there. or end all your programs currently running

well process lists only contains exe files not flat sys files.

Also this is a BACKUP HARD DRIVE my windows is running on a C drive this is on D so it should not be in use.

What file is it ill upload it somewhere you can dl it to somewher you want and yea we can try that :P
