I went to see the x-men movie the other day, i personally thought it was amazing, but instead of paying again i downloaded it. I could play it but there was no video, nor sound. This was rather irritating as it took me like 4 hours to download... ( torrents yay.. ). I searched everywhere for the codecs and couldn't find it, probably because i didn't know what one i was looking for to start with. I came over this package and it's pretty epic, has every codec you can think of ( not literally ofcourse ). I have downloaded all different types of video's to test it out and i've yet to come across one it can't play.

Lol, At the end it always has the .mp4 or .avi
It should be simple enough to find a player for them. But i guess like stated it works for all and saves you a few google searches.

K-lite codec pack is the best. Hell, just google codec pack and it will be the first one to pop up. This is for a reason.
