Best Virus Scanner List! IF you don't have a good one, come look here

Hey, I figured since we didn't have one, I would make one here.

This will be a list of the best and probably the most popular virus scanners on the web, if you think one should be added, respond and I will put it up here. Anyway, let's start.

    Avasti
    - avast! antivirus - high security and protection from malware with anti-spyware and anti-rootkit software built in
Avasti is a great virus scanner, the one I use the most, better yet, the home edition is free once you sign up for a free registration key.

avast! antivirus Home Edition provides continuous protection of your valuable data and programs by updating itself automatically. Simply install and forget. It also comes with anti-spyware & anti-rootkit protection for Windows, which are typically available only in the paid versions of many antivirus product

    AVG
    - AVG Anti-Virus and Internet Security - Home and Small Office Security

AVG is not one of the best virus scanners out there, it comes with anti spam and web safety (some virus scanners don't have that, most do). I used to use it ntil i switched to Avasti and a couple others I will post soon.

Comprehensive protection for your computer! AVG ensures your safety while you search or surf the net, download music, documents and pictures, send emails or instant message by scanning documents, files, Web pages and Web links before you open them. AVG Internet Security is a reliable and easy-to-use solution for home and small office users.

    Nod32
    - Antivirus Software - Eliminate viruses with ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security

By far this is my most favorite and in my opinion the best virus scanner out there, combined with avasti, I am always safe on the web.

ESET (nod32) delivers the fastest, most effective and most proactive antivirus and antispyware software solution to eliminate viruses, spyware, adware, worms, trojans, rootkits and other malware before they attack your system. Nobody does proactive protection better than ESET!

    Spybot S&D
    - The home of Spybot-S&D!

Spybot Search and Destroy isn't exactly a virus scanner but I feel that this needs to be on the list, this by far is one of the best trojan removers.

With the release of Spybot-S&D 1.6, our detectives have spent some hard time implementing some of the new technologies to improve Virtumonde detections, increasing our detection range by more than 40% to now more than quarter of a million detection patterns to identify more than one million fingerprints.

    Kaspersky
    - Antivirus Software: Kaspersky Lab - Protection Against Malware and Cybercrime

I have not had much experience with this one myself, but I hear great things about it.

A new standard of Internet threat protection for your home or small office. Award-winning protection against viruses and spyware, identity theft and phishing, hackers and spam.

    Bitdefender
    - BitDefender Antivirus

This a great anti virus, does everything you need and then some

Protects your PC in real time from known viruses, spyware and other malware with hourly updates. Detects and removes the newest breed of hidden threats known as rootkits.Provides a smooth gaming experience by reducing the system load to a minimum.Protects against phishing attacks by filtering all accessed web pages for fraud attempts.

    Spy Sweeper
    - Webroot | Spyware Detection and removal by award-winning Spy Sweeper software

Great adware remover and such, plus it's free.

Webroot Spy Sweeper detects, removes and blocks even the most vicious spies. As spyware threats continuously grow more sophisticated you need antispyware protection that not only detects and removes the latest generation of spies but also blocks new spyware threats before they can infect your PC.

    Norton
    - Norton. Award-Winning Protection.

Norton isn't the best one out there from what I hear, the only experience I have had with is on my friends comp, I hear it's decent, but not the best.

    Mcafee siteadvisor.
    - McAfee SiteAdvisor - Firefox Extension Download

Is a great way to surf the web completely safe, thank you Viter for posting this, I have it, but forgot too!

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    - Malwarebytes.org

Seems to pick up a lot of malware that other AV's miss. Thank you Gone Phishing BBL for posting this.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is considered to be the next step in the detection and removal of malware. We compiled a number of new technologies that are designed to quickly detect, destroy, and prevent malware. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can detect and remove malware that even the most well-known Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware applications on the market today cannot.

Again , if you feel there needs to be one up here that isn't post the name and a link to the site and I will review it and add!

Most of those suck, but are good enough if you aren't download strange .exe's all the time.

The best imo of those are kaspersky since it has proactive defense, which is basically bulletproof (the 7 version, 8 version proactive defense isn't as good).

Scans doesn't mean anything these days, signature scans suck, heuristic scans are easy to avoid.

Bitdefender, I recommend it to anyone I'm really glad I got it. Uses minimal resources when gaming, and out of gaming. I switched from Norton ( was preinstalled on my computer) best move ever made :P

Don't use 2 anti virus softwares at the same time, it leavs holes in your computer and you will be much safer with just one.

I agree, most people think look I have two Av's so I must be invincible. But your the ones who are going to get the viruses. If any of you guys have Norton pre installed on your pc just remove it, false positives + the resources it uses is a killer

Combine NOD32 (Threatsense technology, prevents sites known for dling trojans/keyloggers etc from even loading) with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (if you have any malware on your computer, this will find it, The active protection is nice to).
