What is the best way to show the monster count without open map up?

The game will only tell you if 50 or fewer monsters remain. If the zone contains more than 50, the field gets populated with the default byte value of FF. You can find this value in

GameController.IngameState.ServerData.MonstersRemaining

Besides pressing tab to open up the map info pane, you can also macro "/remaining" as a chat command.
