Sending keystrokes to AoC window in background

I've tried making some simple AutoIt macros for AoC, but a big annoyance is that AoC does not respond to keystrokes/commands sent when the window doesn't have focus. This worked fine in other games (WoW etc.).

I read up on the AutoIt help which says something about some programs needing focus if they read the keyboard directly instead of parsing keystrokes. I guess that applies to AoC.

Anyone know about a workaround for this? If all else fails my guess is it might be posible to create some kind of 3rd party hack that could trick AoC into taking keystrokes...
