It allows you to access the drive without opening the case after the initial install. Lite-on's require the Key which depending on what version require different methods. Some require a prob/spread while some can be flashed by purely Sata-->PC connection. Any drive that can be flashed through this Sata-->PC connection can be flashed with this device. *Or* after you have the Key from prob/spear you can update it through this device.
