Well hello there
I think we all have seen plenty of cms systems that tried to be "the next private server whatthe****shouldicallit server management system.
I had my hopes up for FusionCMS, AzerCMS, PlexisCMS, Strawberry, WebCraft, and what not..
Some where really nice, some just obviously the work of beginners and some just looked really nice but had no code i would like to work with. So far i didn't try anything in which i didn't see the need to pretty much customize the whole thing...and i did try many.
I have been working as a web developer for close to 20 years now and of course i don't expect mastery from some 16 year old motivated programmer...but still it is no fun to actually pay for a system, just to realize after a few minutes serious problems.
Yes, this thread started as a rant, but the hope is some of you might sit in front of their machines and nod their heads at least slightly.
So far i have seen two big problems with pretty much every project:
1) Either the developers tried to reinvent the wheel and do everything themselves or
2) They built their project on reeeeally old technology which i don't like. If you remember the old wow armory from..idk 5 years ago built on xml.. the kind of "hey let's ignore mvc although it's been around for 30+ years".
I think if we manage to gather a few developers with a modern mindset and experience we can do better.
Ah yes, now it's the time for everyone to say "what..why should i care?".
Well you don't have to. But if i did learn something over the time it is that most developers have their pro bono projects.
I think another big problem for the other developers is that they usually try to work alone or only with their school buddies/cousins. This provides a very limited pool of experience to access.
I would suggest to develop the system with an Open Community in mind. If the base source is not closed, everyone can participate.
The system ought to be modular built and not restricted to a specific game. I would probably opt for laravel, codeigniter or yii, but that is open for discussion of course.
But at first the only thing of importance is wheter this community got any developers left that could remotely like this idea?
Ah...of course there is always money to be made. If the system works the modules/themes don't necessarily have to be free. Everyone always got some personal special needs.
But for the system to work it has to be maintained and that is simply easier if everyone can try to help.
