Server Code Question

Did all the emulated servers here start out as leaked server code, or where any of them built with only the client application available? I know that building a server emulator when having only access to the client would be a monumental task, and I just wondered what success stories, if any, existed.

The 1st WoW emulator was created from a leaked or an accidental release of WoW debug client. A debug client has most function names and variables in it. This allowed people to reverse engineer quite easily. I dont think a wow server has been leaked before, but some think so.
