    AutoIt v3.3 RELATED TO VB

Okay, b4 you all flame me this is not spam and belongs here. Not in Misc.

I am just putting out there for all you VB programmers that AutoIt is a great language for Windows. It has a million advanced capabilites and is REALLY easy to script in if you are good with VB. I used to doe everything in VB but now i use mostly AutoIt and it is pretty cool. The syntax is very similar and many things in VB can be easily transferred to AutoIt. The help file (.chm) provided withe the install gives a full documentation if the whole language and quite a few UDF libraries included with AutoIt. (AutoIT UDF = User-Defined Function) Also the forums have a great community and are willing to help n00bs.

Just a suggestion to people who are good with VB XD !

No, this is not related to VB even though you say it is. Misc exists purely for languages like AutoIt. Incidentally, there's NO reason to choose AutoIt over VB, seeing as every script you make in AutoIt gets virus flagged (even though they're clean), wheras VB being a real language (sorta) it doesn't, and you can do more with it. Way, WAY more.

Well, it's alright, but I'd much rather have a real language like C.

What you call "real" languages are much harder to learn that the other ones. Vb and autoit3 is very easy.

*facepalm* Real languages you can do more in, and are harder to code in because they are better. It's easy to jump on a trampoline. It's hard to do flips on a trampoline. Which is the impressive thing to do?

I love this. I am making a suggestion. I am not saying AutoIt is better than VB. I also would like to point out that not EVERY au3 script is flagged by a virus scanner. 2 things amke an AutoIt .exe get flagged. Being compiled with UPX packer and using certain scripting functions that are also commonly used in keyloggers. I have only had 1 script be flagged and it WAS a keylogger. As for the remarks about "real languages" AutoIt is a scripting language. It is a medium for C and C++. AutoIt is a "real language" and it is just as capable as VB and can even interface with VB by using DLLCall and VB Dll's. AutoI is an extremely powerful language and should not be dismissed as un-impressive. I can do anything a language that can compile a DLL can do.

    [/rant]

AutoIt is also nice because it is easy to learn, ecspecially for a VB 2008 user who needs to write something. I was only recommending that some of our more advanced VB programmers learn it. I think with a few more advanced users, AutoIt could become a good thing for MMOwned, because n00bs and experts can both learn it easily.

AutoIt is nowhere near as capable as VB (which is nowhere near as capable as C#),. Obviously the .au3 scripts don't, but the compiled scripts do. And before you start with DLL calls, they don't count - by that logic my own little scripting language called ReidScript is as powerful as C++, when it obviously isn't as all it can do without calling a bunch of dlls is print a line of text to the screen.

Now you are just being defensive . If DLL calls do not count than neither do most UDF's for AutoIT which makes the language just okay. Not a wonder but okay. You have a valid point but you just do not see the point of my thread. I wasnt trying to start a flame war over if a scripting language is better than a "real language" like C++ or C#. I was trying to say that AutoIt is something good VB writers might be interested in / good at.

Mmmmm lovely. (Yes, I'm posting in a closed thread)

AutoIT is a SCRIPTING LANGUAGE. This is far different than a PROGRAMMING language.

While AutoIT is quite powerful, it will never be as powerful as actual programming languages. It's a simple fact, and I don't think even the creators of AutoIT would disagree.

Sure, you can make DLL calls with AutoIT. You can do all sorts of neat stuff. But it walks a very fine line when you decide to move into more complicated things. (Seriously, AutoIT is *not* the language to use for most applications. Especially critical ones.)
