    Counter-Strike's History

Counter-Strike today is one of the most known names in the virtual world.
The idea of Counter-Strike originally came from the programmer and designer Minh Le.

After the first game he was working on called “Navy Seals” which was based on Quake SDK.
Because of the ongoing war against terrorism Minh thought it would be very interesting
to make a game of terrorist against Counter terrorists.

He was able to make the idea a reality with the help of videogame developer Jess Cliffe.
The two started the game as a mod for Half-Life in 1999 which they called Counter-Strike version 1.0.

1.0 was released on March 24 and the mod slowly started to gain popularity. The mod
was released and Valve began taking a great interest in the mod and even contacted Minh and Jess.

Due to the growing fan base Valve saw an opportunity and bought the rights to the mod and the name Counter-Strike in 2000 a few months prior to the release of Counter-Strike 1.6 on November 8. And the competitive part of Counter-Strike slowly started to take form with teams but it wasn’t as recognized as a “sport” as it is today.

Minh and Jess were hired by Valve to make better versions of Counter-Strike. A few years after the official release of 1.6, Condition-Zero was released in 2003 March 23, with a whole new team of developers and with the GoldSrc engine which features updated character models, textures, maps and other graphical advantages.
Condition-Zero also featured the first achievements and a single player mission unlike the other Counter-Strike games. Valve, Rogue Entertainment, Gearbox Software, Ritual Entertainment and Turtle Rock Studios started working together on Condition Zero in the early 2000, and the first announcement was in 2001, but do to a few complications they couldn’t release the game before 2003.

In 2004 the Valve team and Turtle Rock Entertainment worked together to make Counter-Strike: Source and with the new Half-Life 2 engine the game development opportunities were almost endless.
As computers got better and graphics got smoother, better game physics started developing and everything chanced for the Valve Team.
After the Release of “Source” Minh decided to leave Valve, he moved to South Korea and continued he’s videogame development.
Jess stayed to co-create some of the games we know today such as Left 4 Dead and Portal.

The years went by while the Counter-Strike community seemed to be dying down and Steam grew bigger and sold a lot other games, so the community didn’t have the same interest in Counter-Strike as they used to.

Back in 2009 Hidden Path Entertainment made a port of Counter-Strike: Source to Xbox Live Arcade
and Valve instantly saw a new opportunity to make a whole new game out of the port.
Valve contacted Hidden Path and in 2010 they started the work on “Global Offensive”
and was revealed to the public on August 12 2011.

Global Offensive started as a beta on November 30 2011 and all the earlier Counter-Strike players was sparked back into life and a few hundred people got picked out by Valve to test the beta and give feedback on it. Roughly around ten thousand people received a key for the beta at events Valve attended. And after they fixed a few issues they had with the client and the game servers that the “testers” gave feedback on, Global Offensive Beta was in action and open to everyone that wanted to try it.
Valve announced that*Global Offensive*would be released on August 21 2012.

Global Offensive started with a few four game-modes, Casual, Arms-Race, Demolition, and Competitive
and several official maps for each of the game modes.
The Deathmatch gamemode were later added in the post-release with the mechanics of the hostage scenario and with the CZ-75 Auto.
But Global Offensive didn’t start out as the popular game we know today.
Due to a few mistakes with the bugs in the game and a broken hitbox, Global Offensive was a little unpopular with the community at first but after some updates people started to take interest in the game.
Cosmetic items such as "skins", stickers, name tags and weapon-creates was first added almost a year later on August 13 2013 in an update called “Arms-Deal” and had cost and gotten people thousands of Dollars since that update. But so have Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 with the help of micro-transactions which they use in Global Offensive aswell.
Later on same year Valve enabled Steam-Workshop allowing users to create and upload custom weapons in Global Offensive and other games.

That was the quick history about Counter-Strike so far.
But what i really want to know is if you think there will be a future for Counter Strike?? Or if Valve is making a new Counter Strike??

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a new Counter Strike sometime after the next iteration of the Source engine is released, as the history of the game has shown here.

Very nice article! It's nice to know more about the background of such a famous e-sports game.

    As for your question to your readers at the end;

I think valve is still a bit limited as far as the current engine goes with CS:GO, so a new CS should come out once a new engine that makes enough of a difference comes out. Things to make hitbox more realistic, more fluid action, maybe even get rid of spray patterns. (I know, it's a sensitive topic, but in my opinion, learning a spray pattern isn't what should make you a good player, as is the case with CS at the moment.)

Until a new engine comes out, just like it's predecessors, it should keep getting bigger and bigger. As long as they keep up with the game hacking scene.
    What's a Parog?
    Looking for competitive Valorant team!

Personally I think CSGO is just going to get updated to source 2 just like Valve updated Dota 2 recently.
