Leveling Up Quickly and Efficiently

Upgrade Your Gear Always! It will transfer to new equipment (ranks/gems that match sockets), so there is no reason not to do it. You will want to get to 420 Combat Rating ASAP in order to do the raid after you hit 40-ish. I wouldn't focus on the accessories while leveling though, since it uses some pretty hefty materials. Try to focus on any legendary items first, and then the remainder of your armor.



Your Combat Rating comes from gear as well as your stats on the gear, so even if it’s not the best magic effect while leveling, it’s better to upgrade and get any amount of extra damage for leveling, because the stats will be increased as well, which give you an overall survival increase. More damage = less dying to groups of enemies if they die faster. Or as the Demon Hunters say, Accuracy through Volume.

Pro-Tip: Turn on Auto-Pickup! Open the Menu, click the cogwheel on the top right, then in General check off the following options.



Now you never have to click anything other than specific items like Keys, Legendary Items etc., again. Upgrade items, then salvage everything.

Levels 1-41

The leveling experience compared to Diablo 3 is very different. You have the same kind of tasks to do, but the speed at which your level increases is not tied to mob kills, rather it is tied to elite kills and completing tasks in the battle pass.



That being said, because of the way that legendary gear (equipment and gems) is acquired, it is actually beneficial to get the battle pass. Simply because as you level up your battle pass, you will gain the rift crests to have a chance of getting a legendary item. They do drop from the Yellow Crests pictured above, but they are extremely rare. On top of this, you do get a few Legendary Crests to use with the battle pass, but you get 1 with the free pass at level 20. There are 2 in the entire empowered battle pass row. So for a total of 3 legendary crests (3 guaranteed legendary drops).

The first step is to do the main story line, until you hit a level wall. It should be around level 41. For breaks you can do other tasks, but the quests will give you quite a bit of experience and you should be pretty fine for leveling until then.

Whenever you hit a level wall, you do your daily/weekly tasks, as completing them gives you experience and sometimes items.

One of the better ways to knock out multiple dailies is to do your bounties. The first time you do it, you will have 16 bounties to do, with a daily limit of 8 which add up to give you more in a day to complete should you skip a day. Which is nice.

For every 4 bounties you finish, you will get a chest with a few thousand gold (not really important), but there are items you can salvage for upgrading your gear. In addition to this, while killing enemies for the bounty, you will inevitably obtain Monstrous Essences which are used for the Bestiary. Doing 3 of these per day will give you quite a few battle pass points and a chunk of experience.

In addition to doing these, you will have quests that reset every 72 hours.



These quests give you quite a big bump in battle pass experience, which is why they are limited. There will be a total of 6 quests every reset.
While doing the main story, you will get a red dot on your Codex to open your Guide section. DO NOT turn these in unless you are at a level wall and have exhausted all of your options. They give you a lot of experience, as well as battle pass points, and should only be used when necessary.

You will level fairly quickly doing your daily activities, and just doing the main story, so you shouldn’t have too much of an issue prior to level 41.

Rinse and Repeat

No doubt, as you unlock different content, you will be able to add the daily routines into doing different types of content to boost your character. Just make sure that you are only doing them if you cannot continue the main story. There are a few break points at 41, 51, 56 and such, so make sure that you save up enough of the turn-ins to boost your level by doing mass completion of tasks.

Clarification on break points: I am not 100% sure of what the actual quest requirements are at certain times, all I can say is while doing this process, those are the levels the quests were telling me I had to work up to.

I also found that while doing normal rifts, it's better to just run through everything, find the blue mobs until you cannot do anymore. Usually the swarms will get caught in your damage abilities and die anyway, but the completion orbs you get will launch you to the end very quickly.
