Help Wanted to start up with model editing

Hello there, im interested of learning how to edit models and such. I've been downloading atleast 8 different programs, checked atleast 30 guides but have found help nowhere. Here i would love to get info about what program(s?) to use and how to use them. I've got My Warcraft Studio, were i aint getting further then choosing a mpq file. I recive an error message when i chose a file from the mpq file in Data folder and the program shuts down. Same issue with Model Viewer. "Runtime Error! *wow modelview.exe destination*
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information"
And i've got Hex Workshop, were i aint getting further then choosing an mpq file either. I get a chesslike pattern wich contains alot small boxes with numbers and letters. As i've said, i've finecombed the whole internet and found nothing. Did i fail? However, would love to get this to work, would be greatly thankful

Well if your using vista you may want to try running it as admin, i honestly dont know if it will fix it, but i know running programs as admin on vista can fix ALOT of things so why not give it a shot if you run vista

Nope, sitting on a xp machine =/
A proper guide for what program to use and how to use it would probably do. I open theese files simply and most likely wrongfully, with the program i use atm.
