Here is a short guide to making the music and audio you record or find, put in a video etc. sound better...
First, download Audacity which is a good free audio editor from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
A few basic techniques:
Making something louder --
Open the audio file in Audacity you want to make louder, press CTRL+A to select everything if thats what you want. Go to Effect > Amplify > and the default settings should be fine. Hit OK, and your audio file will be amplified.
Noise reduction:
Now that you've amplified your file a bit, you may hear more clicks pops etc if its not a good recording. To fix this, select a few seconds of the noisiest part in the file, then go to Effect > Noise Removal > Get Noise Profile. Then, CTRL+A or select which parts you want to have noise removed, then go back to Effect > Noise Removal. Adjust the slider and hit Preview, then Remove Noise when you think its enough (use a really low setting for best quality)
Getting rid of clipping --
Clipping is when part of an audio file is too loud, and so the waveform cuts off at the top and you get this really bad distorted sound. It looks like this: Picture
To get rid of it, first select the section that is clipping, then go to Effect > Normalize and hit OK.
After you fix any clipped sections, you can go back and amplify it more if you want, but you will start to lose quality if you do it too many times.
