Well, it worked for me, just follow these steps:
First of all, every time i tried it (me, friends of mine, friends of friends....) we always had lock in our party (summoning stone...).
1) HH drops the helm or pet ==> one of your party takes it.
2) Let him pass you the pet/helm.
3) Use your HS, and get back to Dalaran.
4) "Use" your lock to be summoned back outside the istance.
5) Get inside the cimitery istance.

But the main problem ive had with this trick, is that eventually, the achievement will fade away if you do not have the hallowed helmet in your own bag.

Helmet dropped for me yesterday, i traded it away to a friend, and lost my achievement after logging back an hour after, thankfully, i got the hallowed helmet today aswell, and im keeping it for now.

i got mine yesterday using the zone out method (ported to Dalaran), but neither myself nor anyone in my guild saw any confirmation of achievement.

i initially thought that it didn't work, then after i checked my achievements (press Y), sure enough it was there and i got a mail from Alexstrasza which i knew was the mount for the achievement.

I did this, and I can CONFIRM, this does NOT work.

It works perfectly with the helm.

It will not work for the pet because the criteria for the achievement is learning the spell, not possessing the item.
