Why don't we see any pre-1.12.1, 2.4.3, 3.3.5, 4.3.4 etc. servers?

I've been wondering why we don't see any mid-expansion servers? All of them are set in the last patch before the launch of the next expansion. I know there are emulators for other patches, so how come no open servers are using those?

I suppose it is nice not to need a plethora of different clients if you play on a lot of different servers, and that the latest patch is usually the one with the least bugs and definitely the most content. But to me, 1.12.1 and 2.4.3 are very similar if you disregard changes to the ui, honour system and the new content. An earlier patch would give a much more authentic vanilla feel. Though I suppose we'd miss out on Naxxramas and other stuff.

I guess in a way I see it, but it would be cool to try a server like that, even though you probably would have a large permanent playerbase.

I believe its because of bug ironing out. The bigger the player base the more bugs are reported and fixed. In addition to that, how would you be able to choose who gets the patch and who doesnt? Some people would be angry because they want the new content and some would be angry because they want a more stable version of the game, so there is no real solution to it

In addition to that the reason they dont make vanilla/xy expansion servers is because they think it would create player base imbalances. Their goal is always to advance the game further.
