How to solo the Whale Shark in Vashj'ir

My first post here, had a search through about this but I couldn't see any.

How to Solo the Whale Shark

I did this as a Fire Mage, but any class with mobile DPS should be able to do this



First thing you must get is a Range mod, something which tells you how far away the target is. The Whale Shark is so big it's almost impossible to guess. I used RangeFinder from Curse, this is crude, but it works.

Next you need patience, I tried searching for but got bored and annoyed so I stopped.

The Whale Shark swims very slowly, you can outrun him by swimming backwards (can you see where this is going?) You must stay between 5 & 20 Yards away. If he hits you, he will 1-shot you! I think on my first attempt he hit me for about 500k.

The biggest risks here are

1. Going out of Range
2. Getting hit
3. Changing zones and him resetting*

(*This happened to me once, I didn't tempt fate by testing it again)

Ok, what you need to do... basically, pull him, keep him between 5 and 20 yards and DPS. I kept Nespirah to the side of me and used it as a reference for turning. Be very careful with turning, he will catch up if you turn too sharp. This will be a long fight, it took me 30 mins but my gear isn't amazing.

I kept spamming Scorch (obviously while moving with talents) Living Bomb, Flame Orb, Fireblast, Hot Streak and Time-Lust (has be renamed in my guild ). I avaeraged 7k DPS for this fight, like I said my gear isn't amazing, but it proves it can be done.

• Don't use Mirror Image
• Don't Ice Block
• Hunters make sure your pet has basically 0 aggro
• Stay away from the surface

The only reason to stay away from the surface is because it screw my camera up!

Keep swimming backwards and watch your range, you should get him with no problems

i did it as a shadow priest, lots of fun. one thing i enjoyed doing was throwing out my sfiend + fade, so he tanks for a bit. +rep for the guide

lol.. I think that they made it so clothies can solo something for once and near impossible for pallies to the whole point to this guy. Pallys can still solo, just that they are limited to what they can use, which is quite a bit more abilities than warriors and feral druids.

Did this get hotfixed or am i doing something wrong? When i pull him at 20 - 30 or 40 yards range he one shots me instantly. :S

It still seems to work. However you need to pull him when standing in front of him any other side will one shot you.

If he can be soloed, Id take a wild guess, could he be 3 manned or something? Tank, Healer and DPS, I think I got the right guys in my Guild for that..

It is IMPOSSIBLE to survive getting hit by him. Unless you have a pally popping DS, but that only lasts 8 seconds, so can't be burst through that. He hits 345 item level tanks for 400k+. so you might as well have your healer go dps.

Get an addon that tracks range (Icehud has a built in range tracker for current target) and just kite him like how OP posted.

Hm, he hits me at at 5-10y. its impossible to keep range

If it says you are LoS then you need to move closer to him. If you stay in between 5-20 yards it doesnt seem to hit me and if you go further then 20 yards it seems tom reset. As I said before pull him when swimming in front of him else you will get hit anyways no matter how far away you are.

I got roflstomped with a 650k crit... this is rather difficult to pull off.

Thanks for the info! Over the course of an hour last night I was able to get him between 87-95% several times but was mostly unsuccessful due to either unintended zone changes or sharp turns causing him to catch me too quickly. On a few attempts that were perfectly normal something would stop me from swimming backwards? I'd turn and immediately begin swimming but if I faced him again and tried to swim backwards it would be as thought I was up against an imaginary wall. Of course it only takes a matter of seconds for that mistake to catch up.

I plan on trying again this weekend and kiting him around the path you recommended a bit better. Just having problems making that kite path without the turn being too sharp and causing him to catch up.
