Not so much as guide as a handy tip. I searched the forum but found nothing related to this quest.

If you mount up on a mammoth mount you can actually run on the bottom of the canals rather than swim. It makes this quest a lot faster. You can of course just use Elixir of Water Walking or something simular as well.
