    Lets Resurrect the Emulation Scene!

The Emulation Scene looks pretty dead at the moment.

    What I was thinking is introducing Community Projects;

Pick the Creme de la creme out of each apsect of Emulation, C++, Lua, Database Development, etc and bring them all together to release a Offical MMOwned release, this could be from a Repack to a new working battleground! Expand on our ideas together in a group and improve them.

I for one am up for this, anyone with me?

    Lets Resurrect the Emulation Scene!

Team work, especially with something such as scripting, is hard to do. People have different scripting styles as well, which would clash and different ideas on how to do things. Then the better people would start rewriting the people who aren't as good work because it could be better/has a bug, and so you see it will end in conflict.

Pretty much what Stoneharry said; it's very hard to get the "creme de la creme" to all work together; it never endsu p working out, and it's been tried way too many times.
It would be better to make a team of "Official MMOwned Releasers", and they work on official MMOwned projects; but individually, all on their own. It would allow people to work individually but still have that team feeling.

The team of 'Releasers' would end up like the old news team members, think its great to start then do nothing and get booted. Ill have a talk with Kur and Harry about this.

True again, which is why you need to kick them in the ass when they do shit like that. :P

Well if we really want too, we can. Maybe you have to apply for the position. and 2d (since he's leet in C++) and Stone (Leet in Lua) they like hires for those positions. I mean it could work, we just have to really try.
or have different people working on different projects.

edit: if this doesn't work out, we can always try to make the Emu section more lively some other way.

    1) Im not leet in C++ nor have i ever said that :P

    2) It's what should be released thats the problem, anyone can make a blizzlike 'repack' or database but to make something unique people very rarely give it away as they would rather sell it to as server thats insane or keep it for there own server to attract new players to its uniqueness.

    3) Too many projects is doomed to fail, look at all the rips of like ArcEmu or whatever e.g. ShyEmu or OMGIMHOTemu. Also people at this current state who are any good at anything are either working underground or not at all, the emulation community is too demanding (look at what happened with patch 2.4).
If you need me you have my skype, if you don't have my skype then you don't need me.

I like the idea, but it's hard to accomplish. I'd be happy to assist though
Have we never tried to do an MMOwned Private Server?

Anyone will tell you this is a great idea, and it is, but not in practice.

    - This is a problem specifically in emulation, and independent game development: People don't respect authority. They don't listen to the project leaders. In some cases it's a good thing, because the project leaders shouldn't be running a project in the first place, but generally it's bad because the leader has a vision and you're there to make that vision. In things like this, that never happens because everyone has a vision of what they want, and they don't match up. People make games (for example) based on other peoples' ideas because they're paid for it, not because they want to (in my experience). While you may get lucky and get people to work together, it's far better when you can get a common goal, and eliminate this problem entirely.

    - Drama: You need to avoid drama in your project. If you have people causing problems, those people need to be removed or managed in some way. You have to avoid reliance on anyone, so you can replace troublemakers with people who have a more mild temperament who won't make the project suffer when they decide to throw a temper tantrum. This applies to everyone, leaders and workers.

    - Bad leadership: Frankly, everyone i've seen in emulation (in this case, big servers where the admins are only interested in profiting from it, rather than for the fun of the game which is why you should be doing it) don't have a clue on how to run a project when you have a lot of people interacting. It's a difficult subject, but if someones going to lead a project they need to put some time and effort into learning about the subject of the team they need to know how to run a server, and more importantly, what development entails. It's particularly hard over the internet because anonymity means there are no consequences, so even if you have a good team with good leadership, you will have people who will just disregard everything you say. Those people should be kicked. The difficulty comes from one simple question- Who's at fault?

    - Agile development: This is what you should be doing.

    - Thinking too big: This kills more projects than anything else. People don't start small, and if that's the case your project is doomed from the start. You have to let a project grow, you can't make the next big thing in one day. Start with a simple goal. "I want to make a new battleground". Get the programmers together and discuss how you can accomplish it. "We can load separate copies of Kalimdor, and put the battleground in instanced versions of Orgrimmar." It's possible, start fleshing out your plan. "We'll have two flags, and make it a traditional CTF match" Now the programmers need to figure out whether that's possible. It continues pretty similarly, but eventually you'll bring in bigger aspects of the project such as content development (NPCs, objects, whatever.)

Sorry for the wall of text.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
