iPod Touch 2g jailbreak

How many of you have done this on your iPod Touch 2g? As far as I know, it's tethered right now, but there are programs to make it semi-automatic.

I did this when it first came out (manually), but it didn't fully work for me. The whole point of jailbreaking is to get the jailbroken apps and stuff on your iPod Touch/iPhone, but when I jailbroke mine the Installer.app and Cydia were missing! I tried to re-do the jailbreak, but the same thing happened.

I un-jailbroke my iPod, but I'm wondering if anyone else has done this the semi-automatic way, and if it worked or not. I would just try it out for myself sine there's little to no chance of bricking, but I have so many apps and stuff on my iPod that it takes hours to load everything back on after jailbreaking =/.

My dad was talking about this, he was considering buying me one. What does the jailbrake do then just allow homebrew?

Yeah I think that is the main thing it does...I'm pretty sure jailbreaking just allows programmers access to the iPod's core files, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
