The Mist of Pandaria beta testing phase has officially begun. Blizzard is inviting players in waves so be sure to check your email! The beta finally launching is great, as this opens up tons of new options for World of Warcraft exploits, exploration, model editing, and general chat, and once again we can expect to start seeing lots of fun and exciting content from World of Warcraft, whether it be from a general shake up in the World of Warcraft, or from exploits and such.
Hopefully this means we can expect an official launch date on Mists of Pandaria as well. With the recent announcement of Diablo 3 launching on May 15th 2012, it's likely that we'll start hearing news of the Mists of Pandaria launch date soon as well.

Recently I got the opportunity to chat with Tanaris4, the lead developer behind Pocket Gnome.
More information about Tanaris4 and Pocket Gnome can be found at the bottom of this interview, or by following links in the article.

What exactly is your affiliation with Pocket Gnome?
    Lead Developer
What made you decide to develop a WoW bot, and how did you get started with it?
I actually didn't decide to, it kind of fell into my lap. The previous developer decided to open source the software and move on to other things in his life, so I offered to take over development + releases. Pocket Gnome was the first bot I ever used, I didn't even play wow when Glider was around.
What's been your biggest challenge in developing the bot thus far?
I'd say the largest was learning a new programming language (I didn't know Objective-C), and then just learning how wow works (huge props to those on OwnedCore that had patience for me in the memory editing section, I learned everything I know from them).
So you are basically self-taught in the language and figured it out with the help of our forums?
This book was a god send:
Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X
Read the first 100 pages, then I was ready to go and anything related to offsets, reverse engineering, etc... - all learned from a couple IDA books that were recommended by the OwnedCore guys and their posts/contributions.
Can you give me a brief history of where Pocket Gnome has been, and where it's going?
Great question, I believe it was started sometime in 2008/2009 (not by myself), And it has always existed as just a helpful toolkit, which is what I'd like to have it continue to be; It's not meant to be a one-click get me to level 85 and walk away, however, in the future that may be different.
So you're planning some major revamps for Pocket Gnome then?
The next major launch will include navigational meshes, similar to HonorBuddy, which will open the door to a lot of other uses.
Do you find yourself able to manually play World of Warcraft anymore given all of the internal workings that you know about it now?
Absolutely, although I will say there was about a 6 month period where League of Legends dominated a lot of my time (wish they had a mac client!!) but I've been playing the 4.3 content quite often lately, I love the random raid finder. Since the lawsuit began, it has added a lot more stress to my personal life, unfortunately. Before that process started in November, it wasn't much stress at all.
How much time do you have to invest into working on keeping PocketGnome running, and how has that affected your personal life?
I would say I invest around 10-20 hours per week that are dedicated to Pocket Gnome (I have a day job, so I can't really dedicate much more). I have a very understanding girlfriend that allows me dedicate a few of my nights a week to working on PG, and the majority of time lately has been on the future version of Pocket Gnome, which will include pathfinding.
I see. So the lawsuit has really put a damper on things, then?
    Yes, absolutely.
When you were younger is this something you envisioned yourself ever doing as a "career"? If not, what did you see yourself doing?
I don't see it as a career, I wish it could be. For me, working on Pocket Gnome is just fun, and I enjoy the thought that other people are able to do other things with their lives (have a family, go out with friends, maybe add another hobby) instead of grinding levels or mobs for items/XP. I have been a developer since I started with Visual Basic (don't laugh) when I was around 11. Even though my day job wasn't directly related to development, I've always thoroughly enjoyed writing software. I would love to eventually run my own company (preferably software, or something technology related) that could enable others to pursue careers in development.
You seem very enthusiastic with Pocket Gnome, but what other people have helped you out the most in your work with Pocket Gnome?
Too many to name, and many unnamed I hate to say. Honestly the quote by Newton is so fitting for me, "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
Without the ownedcore community, and their patience, I would never have learned what I know today to continue to improve and build on Pocket Gnome. Without the original Pocket Gnome developer, my interest or even awareness of such a great software solution would never have existed. Without my forum moderators and business partner, I wouldn't have the time to actually work on the software (as I'd probably be answering forum posts all day), nor the money to make investments in software and other developers, and of course various articles/posts randomly found via Google, there isn't much on reverse engineering for OS X. Quite jealous of the windows devs at times.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
To grant wishes. Strange, maybe, but it could help fix a lot of the world's problems.
What is your creative process on new features for Pocket Gnome?
It isn't much of a process really, but all stems from user requests. All improvements come from bug reports and the suggestions forum on our site.
Fair enough. What is your setting of choice while programming?
My home office for sure (in my basement): http://dump.tanaris4.com/desk.jpeg
But I also do enjoy just sitting at my dining room table from time to time (better light)
Note: that is the cleanest my desk has ever been
Being a mac only client, and to my knowledge the most well-developed, if not the only bot available for mac users, how do you feel about the community that has developed around Pocket Gnome?
I love them, they are seriously amazing. *Without them I would have no motivation or drive to continue working on it, and I can only compare it to one other community I used to run (wc3mods.net, war3ft.com) - warcraft mod for counter-strike. Very different userbase, although still gamers nonetheless.
Do you have any advice for potential or aspiring developers?
    Pursue your passions, always.
If you could say one thing to potential PocketGnome customers, what would you tell them?
We've put a lot of time and effort into creating a well-rounded product, and are continually improving to adapt to everyone's needs. You won't regret your purchase!
Alright, and just to clear this one up for all the PocketGnome users out there, is it lrn2 or l2?
Most definitely L2, I'm not sure what Phillis was ever thinking

    OwnedCore user Questions
The following are questions OwnedCore members sent in for me to ask.

How do you think future versions of Pocket Gnome will measure up to competitors such as Bossland bots, or even private bots?
We're always going to try to create the best software solution for our users, and as we see requests for features we may not have, we will definitely look into adding them. This is mainly why we're working so hard to add navigational meshes (something that Honorbuddy has had for quite some time) to the next major release, and unfortunately I haven't used windows bots very much :/ My first exposure to the botting community was Pocket Gnome. I'm very rarely on windows, and I literally know nothing of private bots. I didn't even play WoW when Glider was around.
Do you plan on adding the ability to quest bot in future releases?
Absolutely, it's already in our beta build for 2.0. *You can see it in action here: Pocket Gnome 2.0 Questing Preview - YouTube
Also, it is actually possible to quest today, with the current release. Phillis created a questing route for alliance and horde for Tol Barad dailies, it's just not as fluid as it could be with navigational meshes
Currently, given your knowledge of the way bots work with the World of Warcraft client. Would you say that a ban for botting is high risk low risk or no risk?
That's definitely a loaded question with not one answer. At any given time, botting could be very high risk, if Blizzard decides to implement server side detection heuristics. but I would say currently it's medium risk, depending on the particular bot you are using. Some developers don't bother to understand warden and how their users could be instantly banned, as the recent "ban wave" demonstrates from a particular windows bot. And risk is always defined by the user's actions. If they are botting for 48 hours straight, obviously they will get a ban.
To your knowledge, is Blizzard using any new methods to detect players botting or is it still the same as it has been for multiple expansions?
I don't have any reason to believe it is any different. I think they would be smart to implement some better detection methods, although it seems they would rather fight everyone in court rather than hire an experienced anti-bot developer. Seems they don't actually have the desire to ban all the botters, because then they lose revenue.
    Do you fear Blizzard?
No, I don't fear them. I think they are bullies. Although I do respect them for creating a great game. And other games as well, I'm very much looking forward to play past Act 1 in Diablo 3, and I grew up on Diablo 2, and selling Windforces (a unique and very rare bow dropped in Diablo 2, comparable to a legendary in WoW) on ebay helped me through college quite a bit
Do you prefer pie or cake?
Not a huge fan of cake, I always asked for cookie cakes on birthdays. And I love Cheesecake (although don't have it often).
    Why "Pocket Gnome"?
I inherited the project, so I didn't name it :/
Do you plan to release more bots for other mmorpg's?
I would love to, but I doubt I'll have the time, or the expertise to reverse engineer other games. And it pretty much needs to be a game on OS X, which there are very few.

    2. World of Warcraft

If you're unfamiliar with what a bot is in World of Warcraft, you should take a moment in game to observe players and their actions. Bots can do a wide variety of things, including gathering herbs and ore, participating in Battle Grounds, and even running instances. Many realm's economies are reliant on the players that choose to bot, and it's very likely, in fact almost guaranteed, that at some point in time every World of Warcraft player who's purchased any end-game material such as herbs or ore, has in fact made a transaction with a bot that collected the items.

With the recent closure of the popular World of Warcraft Pirox Bot on January 25th, the effect that bots have in the World of Warcraft are becoming more and more evident. Before the bot officially closed, prices of many materials began rising. Now that one of the major bots on the market is no longer operational, it's very obvious that, although many players may hate botters, the bots certainly help maintain an economy with reasonable prices, and a well-stocked supply of materials to craft with.

While Blizzard continues the legal battles against bots by filing lawsuits on two more popular World of Warcraft bots, HonorBuddy and PocketGnome, one can only wonder what will happen to the economies maintained on the World of Warcraft servers; It's already easy to see that, even with these two bots still operating, there is more demand than supply on many realms, and if PocketGnome and HonorBuddy are ordered to shut down, the results could prove to be truly devastating, especially on highly populated realms. Imagine having to pay 400g for a flask, or 1500g for each Inferno Ruby.

Bots are becoming more and more intelligent and as a result it is becoming increasingly harder to spot a botter in a Battle Ground; even as the bots currently stand, it's not unlikely for a bot to out-perform many other players in the Battle Ground. While many players find it unfair that a person (who is likely tabbed out, sleeping, or even at work) is obtaining the same amount of honor that an actual player is working hard for, the benefits of botting are endless, and many people are simply tired of battling in the same Warsong Gulch they have been playing for roughly 7 years, or do not want to go through the agony of earning the honor needed on a secondary character (or alt, as World of Warcraft players call them), or they simply don't have the time to do these things on their own.

A quick YouTube search can prove that Battle Ground bots can indeed be manipulated to take them off of the "Route" that they are running on, but a question few people ask tends to be "Is `controlling` a botting character worth doing?" By ensuring that a bot runs off track and gets stuck, you're also wasting valuable time to contribute to your Battle Ground group, and the bot will eventually find itself back on track, be it through many bots anti-stuck features, or by another player killing them.

Players may report bots in an attempt to reduce the amount of bots running around, but many popular bots are undetectable by Blizzard, and it can be hard to prove that someone is a bot, and even harder for Blizzard Game Masters to determine whether they are worthy of a ban, or just a completely antisocial player; While being reported is the usual reason behind someone being banned for botting, many bots have aided you in combat in a Battle Ground, beat you to a mining node, or simply flown over-head while you were questing without you ever even noticing that a human isn't actually playing that character.

Love them or hate them, bots play a heavy role in keeping the World of Warcraft market stable and stocked, and can sometimes prove to actually be more help than a nuisance in PVP. They keep your prices low, and create a steady flow of items every end-game player constantly needs.

    Happy botting ,

Mercury of the Glider forums has made one final announcement about the MDY versus Blizzard Entertainment lawsuit that spanned the last couple of years. The monumental case rocked the MMO gaming world and defined the future for bot coders and consumers. This case is especially relevant considering Blizzard Entertainment is also taking legal action against Bossland GmbH in the ongoing Bossland GmbH versus Blizzard Entertainment Honorbuddy/Gatherbuddy lawsuit.

Ocktra was kind enough to provide an update about Glider's company, MDY, written by Michael Donnelly from Glider's official forums.

Quote Originally Posted by Michael "Mercury" Donnelly

I can also divulge that my proposed title for the next WoW expansion, "WoW: Mercury Is A Cool Guy And Needs A Nice Girl Who Also Doesn't Mind Cooking" didn't make it very far.

For Glider customers, this means not much change from where we are now. There was simply no way we could get by Judge Campbell to get Glider back on the market, although we came pretty close. Regardless, there is no point in running forums with no future for Glider.

On Monday, August 22nd, we will be taking down the site and forums. I imagine I'll be around here quite a bit more until then, at least once I get back to Phoenix later today.

Most of the people who have helped out through the years will not see this, but I imagine some folks will cross-post this message on other forums. You have my most sincere appreciation; everyone from OMW to Ocktra and all the others. The community is what made Glider into a true force and I never would have made it this far without you. Losing that through the injunction has been the worst part for me.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing next, but I'm quite certain it won't involve anything to do with Blizzard. Maybe some kind of regular job that doesn't involve a constant barrage of legal and technical attacks. Imagine that.

And, no, I'm not interested in automating Rift unless your job offer includes a hefty starting bonus. Think Ferrari 458-sized.

So long, and thanks for all the cookies.

OwnedCore has long supported Glider and MDY in their lawsuit against Blizzard Entertainment, and MDY (and ocktra) were quick to forward their thanks for years of moral support. Let us only hope that products like Glider and Honorbuddy can be protected from predatory corporate behavior in the future.

Here are the rest of the pages of the Vengeance of the Void "leak". Keep in mind that these documents have not been confirmed or denied by Blizzard. They could be true, they could have an ounce of truth, or they could be completely false. Take them for what they are, and enjoy the read:

Got some juicy stuff and a .RAR filled with information about the new World of Warcraft expansion. Got a hold of some kind of memo from a Blizzard conference or email about the expansion titled, "Vengeance of the Void" with some key points and information for reference for (Metzen?) at the Quests and Lore Q&A at Blizzcon 2011.

I've reproduced the note in it's entirety in text form below in case the image is taken down or rendered inaccessible due to a bandwidth issue.

Feel free to add on anything you want and zing it back to me at the company email, but I’ve just prepped up a list with the Creative dept for some main points that we want to cover at the panel.

    - Levels 85-90
    - “Vengeance of the Void” - Name derived from new enemy “The Void”
    - Expansion will also feature the Burning Legion as a central antagonist.
    - Years after the Burning Crusade, situation in Outland has become unstable. The Burning Legion has regained many lost footholds and made progress agianst the Draenei and other allies on the planet.
    - Explain that because of balancing issues we’d prefer not to add any more hero classes for the fors. future, so we decided to focus on fan fave races with new lore and other new features.
    - Explain Nexus Prince Hafari and the Protectorate’s role in the Alliance. Joins after starting experience in Karazhan and a battle with Prince Malchezaar with the help of the Alliance. Crash lands on the planet on an escape from K’aresh. Mention that Ethereals from Protectorate have a running gag with having worse ships than the Draenei.
    - Explain General Rashiss and the Coralbreach and Naga race role on Horde. Talk about the starting experience in Quel’thalas when Coral Breach is risen from the bottom of the ocean with sorcery.
    - Demon Hunters will play a big role in the expansion after the Sha’tar discovered Illidan Stormrage’s secret written works in Karabor. These works redeemed Illidan in the eye of the Naaru and the Draenei, and many Demon Hunters from all races have come to learn new secrets to fight against the Legion. Mention that Demon Hunters will not be playable.
    - Four new “planets” div’d. into subregions: K’aresh (Kahudi Stone Forest, Kalahad Vas, V’denir), Xoroth (Baneheart Landing, Felsteed Fields, Baldun Mountains), Argus (Mac'Aree, Cage of Sargeras, Forge Camp: Victory), The Nether (Voidbreak, K-13 Crash Site, The Span).
    - Two new starting zones: Deadwind Pass (1-10 Alliance) and Coralbreach (1-10 Horde). Both put the player in the center of the action and feature rich cinematics and stories, and some plain ol’ cool stuff.
    - A’dal will be the main antagonist of the expansion, or will he? The Void is mysterious, enigmatic, and isn’t so set in it’s goals like the Legion. The Void and A’dal even attempt to help players on a regular basis, especially in the revised “Shadows of Outland” questline in Hellfire (60-62).
    - A’dal was corrupted in the invasion of Shattrath City by the Void. Absorbed shadow energies into his body and became the “hive father” of the Void. Leads the Void’s armies through the Nether battling the Burning Legion, the Alliance, and the Horde.
    - Explosion from Deathwing’s demise shattered the Dark Portal, rendering it a major threat for Azeroth. Kirin Tor and Nethergarde work to seal the portal in an arcane shield to prevent Azeroth from being crushed by the pressure of Outland.
    - A ton of lore for the neglected Shadow Priest class. Lots of new story content for Shadow Priests and their interaction with the Void and A’dal.
